A Commitment to Organic Excellence
At Sage Hills Vineyard, every grape tells a story of dedication to organic farming and respect for the land. Spanning 10 acres in Summerland, BC, the vineyard specializes in Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, cultivated without synthetic chemicals. Instead, natural agents like sea-kelp and mineral-based sprays maintain vine health and balance within the ecosystem. This careful attention to sustainable practices helps not only in growing vibrant, flavourful grapes but also supports a diverse habitat for local wildlife, including sage brush and rabbitbrush, which play a role in natural pest management.
The vineyard's approach extends beyond simple farming. Sophisticated canopy management techniques and the strategic use of drip irrigation systems ensure each vine receives the optimal amount of sunlight and water. This not only enhances the aromatic complexity of the grapes but also conserves resources, reflecting Sage Hills' dedication to environmental stewardship.
Portfolio of Wines
Since its establishment in 2012, Sage Hills has been crafting wines that capture the essence of the Okanagan Valley. Only organic, hand-picked grapes from their estate and selected organic farmers in warmer Okanagan areas are used. This allows the production of a variety of wine styles, from fresh sparkling wines and fruit-driven whites to rich, oak-aged reds and fortified wines. Notably, all wines at Sage Hills are vegan and produced in small batches, using natural yeast which further defines their unique, unfiltered character with minimal sulphites.
Each bottle from Sage Hills is produced with their low-intervention philosophy. Whether it's a bottle of their crisp Pinot Gris or a deep, complex Cabernet Sauvignon, wine enthusiasts are treated to a pure expression of the land and its natural rhythms. Specials often include limited releases like orange wines and seasonal fortified varieties, inviting connoisseurs to explore new dimensions of organic wines.
Innovative and Sustainable Winery Practices
Sage Hills doesn't just stop at organic wine production. Opened in 2015, their tasting room is an eco-friendly marvel, built between the vines with an expansive patio offering stunning views of the valley. It's a perfect spot for a glass of wine with a backdrop of nature’s finest views. Moreover, the winery is a pioneer in energy sustainability, being the largest generator of solar power in the district and one of the first net-zero wineries in the area, producing more energy than it uses.
Their commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of their operations, from using lighter weight glass bottles to maintaining a biocycle water system. These efforts ensure that every visit is not only enjoyable but also aligned with environmentally conscious values.
The Passionate Team Behind the Wine
Sage Hills is the vision of Rick and Toby Thrussell, who are involved in the daily operations alongside their son Keenan and his partner Zoë Jacoe. Together, they maintain the high standards of the vineyard and winery, ensuring that each bottle reflects their commitment to quality and sustainability. The family’s passion is evident in the meticulous care they take from vine to bottle.
Visitors to Sage Hills can enjoy a comprehensive tasting experience for a nominal fee, where they can sample a variety of organic wines while learning about the winery's sustainable practices. The tasting room, accommodating up to 22 guests, provides a welcoming atmosphere for families and pets, making it a great destination for wine lovers of all ages.
