Embark on an educational journey at the Summerland Trout Hatchery and Visitor Centre, where the fascinating world of freshwater fisheries comes to life. Established initially as an eyeing station in 1918 and later as a provincial hatchery in 1947, this facility has evolved into a must-visit destination for families and anyone interested in aquatic life. Let's see what makes the Summerland Trout Hatchery a standout attraction.

History of the Trout Hatchery

In 1927, the Dominion Government bought Summerland's old power house to establish a trout hatchery due to the ideal water conditions of Shaughnessy Springs. Initially, the hatchery operated part-time and began stocking local lakes like Darke and Garnet. The provincial government took over in 1937 and constructed a new building in 1947. A visitor center opened in 1990, and ownership was transferred to the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. in 2003. The society, a non-profit organization funded mainly by fishing license fees, now stocks millions of fish annually in partnership with the province and manages programs for endangered species. The Summerland Trout Hatchery is the oldest continuously run trout hatchery in BC.

Did you know? The Summerland Trout Hatchery stocks about 300 lakes in the Okanagan and Thompson-Nicola regions
