The Ultimate Cycling Challenge

The Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan (GAMO) is a premier cycling event that transforms the scenic roads of the Okanagan Valley into a cyclist's paradise each July. Specifically, the Summerland section of this famed route offers a remarkable 25 km stretch that begins at Sun-Oka Park along Highway 97 and heads north, providing a paved path ideal for both casual riders and competitive cyclists. You can challenge yourself on this trail while in Summerland. The King of the Mountain Challenge, a notable segment of this route, features a demanding ascent starting from Trout Creek, turning off at Lakeshore Drive, and climbing up Peach Orchard Road, which becomes Jubilee Road, before a left turn onto Victoria Road S. This section is renowned for its steep incline and breathtaking views, testing the mettle and stamina of participants.

The Event: A Weekend of Cycling and Celebration

Scheduled for July 14, 2024, the Granfondo Axel Merckx attracts a diverse array of cycling enthusiasts, from recreational bikers to elite and professional athletes, all looking to conquer one of the four different distances offered. Ranging from the 153 km Granfondo to the 48 km Cortofondo, each course is designed to showcase the beautiful landscapes of the Okanagan wine country, starting and finishing in Penticton. This event not only highlights the physical challenge of the rides but also embraces a festive atmosphere with pre- and post-ride activities that cater to families and spectators, ensuring a weekend filled with fun, fitness, and the warm sunshine of the Okanagan.

Family Fun with the Piccolofondo

Adding to the inclusive spirit of the Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan is the Piccolofondo, a delightful opportunity for children aged 5 to 12 years. This part of the event features a safe, fun-filled course ranging from 400 metres to 5 kilometres, allowing young cyclists to enjoy their own moment in the spotlight along a circuit that loops past the beautiful Okanagan Lake. With parents and spectators cheering them on, it’s a fantastic way for kids to experience the joy of cycling and participate in a weekend celebrating the sport.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a weekend warrior, the Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan offers a unique blend of competitive racing, leisure riding, and family activities, all set against the stunning backdrop of Summerland’s landscapes. It's a perfect blend of challenge and cheer, where every participant, regardless of the pace, is guaranteed to cross the finish line with a rewarding smile.
