Haywire Winery, an established name under the Okanagan Crush umbrella, has been redefining the winemaking scene with its forward-thinking approach and commitment to sustainability. Located just minutes from downtown Summerland, the winery offers a perfect blend of breathtaking landscapes and meticulously crafted wines. This year, Haywire is excited to unveil a bold new look and a modern tasting lounge designed to enhance the wine-tasting experience for all its visitors.
Vineyards and Sustainable Practices
The Vineyards
Since its inception, Haywire has been deeply committed to sustainable viticulture. The journey began in 2011 when the winery decided to transition to organic farming, achieving organic certification by 2015. Today, Haywire not only continues to advance its organic practices at its original vineyards but has also expanded to Garnet Valley Ranch, where additional organic vineyards have been established. This expansion is part of Haywire's broader commitment to increasing the base of organic grape production in the Okanagan.
Switchback Organic Vineyard
The Switchback Organic Vineyard, where Haywire's journey began, is a 10-acre site dedicated to Pinot Gris. This vineyard was the first of Haywire’s sites to transition to organic practices and shows the winery's long-standing commitment to sustainable agriculture. The soil here is rich in silty, carbonate compounds, providing ideal conditions for growing premium grapes.
Winemaking Philosophy and Techniques
Raised in Concrete
Haywire’s winemaking process is distinguished by the use of concrete tanks, a method reintroduced to capture the purity and expression of the varietals. Initially adopted in 2011, the winery has since expanded its collection to include 40 tanks of various sizes and shapes. This choice reflects a broader philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the wines to develop rich textures and complex profiles naturally.
Using Concrete to Express Terroir
The decision to use concrete tanks was influenced by consulting winemaker Alberto Antonini, who recognized the potential for these vessels to enhance the terroir’s expression. Unlike stainless steel, concrete allows the wine to breathe, contributing to a more complex and textured profile. This old-world technique, combined with modern technology, encapsulates Haywire’s innovative approach to winemaking.
The Wines
The Natural Way
At Haywire, the emphasis is on minimal intervention. The winery utilizes organic grapes and native yeasts, with a restrained use of oak and sulphur dioxide to produce wines that truly reflect the regional characteristics. This approach has given rise to two distinctive wine portfolios: Free Form and Narrative, each offering unique expressions of the Okanagan’s diverse terroir.
Sister Brands
Free Form: Celebrates the uniqueness of each vintage through wines made from organic grapes, native yeast, and minimal additives. These wines are noted for their vibrant textures and purity of flavour.
Narrative: Focuses on telling the dynamic story of the Okanagan Valley through diverse varieties and blends, capturing the geological and climatic diversity of the region.
