Summerland Badminton Club: An Historic Hub for Badminton and Pickleball

Established in 1911, the Summerland Badminton Club is one of the oldest nonprofit societies in British Columbia. Originally focused on tennis, the club later embraced badminton and has become a key part of the community. The current building, constructed in 1934, has been home to the club ever since and was recognized as a heritage building in 2022.

Renovations and Community Contributions

In 2018, the 84-year-old building on Prairie Valley Road underwent significant renovations. These upgrades were completed by club volunteers and supported by a $10,000 grant from B.C.’s Canada 150: Celebrating Communities and their Contributions. This work ensured the historic building could continue to serve as a hub for sports and community events.

Welcoming New Members

When the Penticton badminton club closed, its members joined the Summerland Badminton Club, bringing $70,000 to support the club's activities and facilities. The club welcomes players of all ages and skill levels, with playing times from October 1 to April 30: Monday and Friday from 1-3:30 pm, and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7-9:30 pm. A drop-in fee is $5, and memberships are available.

Junior and Adult Programs

Junior badminton lessons are offered for free, but participants need to bring clean indoor shoes. The club also offers an adult program, with players ranging in age, including some in their 80s, showcasing the club's inclusive and active community.

Pickleball Facilities

Recently, The Summerland Badminton Club began to offer the facilities for pickleball, featuring two indoor hard courts with permanent lines and portable nets. Amenities include restrooms, and a membership is required to play.
