Summerland Sweets: A Taste of Local Tradition

Summerland.com

A Sweet Beginning

Summerland Sweets is a proud example of the rich agricultural heritage of the Okanagan. Founded in 1962 by Ted Atkinson, a Food Science graduate from Oregon State University, this family-run business began as a small venture in a picker's cabin to raise funds for the local Rotary Club. Ted’s commitment to quality and his expertise in food processing, honed at the Federal Agricultural Research Station in Summerland, laid the foundation for what would become a beloved local institution. Ted's initial creation, fruit jelly candies, captured the essence of locally grown, ripe fruits, setting a standard for all products that followed.

Expanding Flavours and Offerings

Today, Summerland Sweets has evolved far beyond its humble origins. The product line has grown to include a variety of fruit-based products such as gourmet jams, pancake syrups, fruit leathers, and candies. Each item is made using only the finest local fruits, picked at the peak of ripeness to ensure the freshest taste and vibrant colours. These creations are a direct reflection of the area's bountiful landscapes, where liberal sunshine and warm weather nurture ideal growing conditions.

In 2008, the establishment expanded its operations to include the Sleeping Giant Fruit Winery, offering a range of wines crafted from the same quality fruits used in their traditional sweets. This addition has allowed visitors an even richer taste of the region’s flavours.

Visit and Experience

Visiting Summerland Sweets offers more than just a chance to try delicious products; it’s an immersive experience in local culture and craftsmanship. The country store, part of the larger facility, is not only a place to sample and purchase the wide range of products but also serves as a showcase for local artistry. Here, visitors can find beautiful local artwork and pottery, along with a fabulous selection of housewares.

For a truly delightful visit, indulge in an ice cream cone while browsing the offerings or relaxing on the patio, or time your visit for when the Summerland Smoke Shack food truck is on-site, serving up some of the best barbecue in the valley. Although closed seasonally, the Smoke Shack is open in the spring and summer to complement the sweet offerings with some savoury goodness.

Join in celebrating over half a century of tradition and taste, and see for yourself why this spot is a cherished part of the community.
